I would guess as opposed to id-shooters like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. ;-)

ego-shooter is the term used for first-person shooters over here in Germany. hm, well ok some of them are also called "killerspiele" (killer games) but that term is usually used by people that don't know what they are talking about (i.e. press, politicians, concerned mums, etc.)
